
Irene Fernández Mena
Irene Fernández Mena is a multifaceted artist in the musical world, known for her passion, versatility, and commitment to both saxophone performance and education. From an early age, she has shown a deep interest in music, approaching different styles and areas of her specialty with an open mind.
Since 2018, Irene has been a Professor of Saxophone at the Conservatorio Superior de Música “Manuel Castillo” in Seville, holding the distinction of being the first and only woman in Spain to achieve this position—a milestone that sets a precedent in the history of the saxophone in the country. In her teaching, she promotes a personalized approach, adapting to the individual needs of each student and fostering both their musical and personal growth.
Her teaching career also includes positions at various professional conservatories across Spain, as well as serving as the baritone saxophone soloist in the Jaén Municipal Band. Recognized for her pedagogical and artistic work, she has been invited to give masterclasses at conservatories and high-performance music academies both nationally and internationally, as well as to participate in conferences on various aspects of the saxophone.
Dedicated to expanding the instrument’s repertoire, she has created numerous arrangements and transcriptions that explore new artistic possibilities for ensembles, saxophone quartets, and saxophone with electroacoustics.
